God of War: Ascension for PlayStation 3 is like a classic Greek tragedy. The game begins in a prison, where Kratos is tied up in chains, ready for a journey full of mythical and brutal beasts with a touch of pathos.

In this prequel, the spartan warrior Kratos broke his oath to Ares and was imprisoned by the good people as punishment for his wrongdoing. The game constantly switches back and forth between the past scenes leading up to Kratos’ imprisonment and the Furies stalking him, poisoning his mind, and attacking him at every turn.

Despite the hallucinations and changes in time, the plot remains as straightforward as that of the protagonist, Kratos. Kratos may be one-dimensional, but like the violence he inflicts, there is pure admiration for this model of steadfast carnage.

Throughout Ascension’s bloody journey, Kratos fights like in other God of War games – chaining attacks, engaging in fast-paced story-driven action, and solving a few puzzles. Combat is still rough and ruthless, which is characteristic of this game series, and it has been maintained.

Like previous games, the rage health bar increases as you deal damage, however it also decreases when Kratos is hit or stops attacking continuously. When your rage health reaches its maximum, normal moves will become more powerful, and special skills can be unleashed. Besides the Blade of Chaos, Kratos has some support equipment, such as elemental magic like fire and ice, as well as secondary weapons that will enrich the Greco-Roman battle.
